April 21, 1994 MEREDITH J. JONES NAMED CHIEF, CABLE SERVICES BUREAU Meredith J. Jones has been named Chief of the Cable Services Bureau. Jones will succeed Alexandra M. (Sandy) Wilson. "Sandy Wilson has performed above and beyond the call of duty as Acting Bureau Chief," Chairman Reed Hundt said. "Long before my arrival here at the Commission, Sandy was working hard to enable the Commission to meet its mandate under the 1992 Cable Act. Under her direction, the staff of the Cable Services Bureau has done an extremely effective job with little time and resources and I commend her for all she has accomplished." Meredith Jones spent two decades as a business lawyer, structuring and negotiating financial transactions, prior to joining the government last year. She began her career at the law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in New York and was then a partner in the San Francisco law firm of Chickering & Gregory. She mainly practiced financial transaction law, working on public and private debt and equity financings. At Cleary, Jones also worked on international banking issues, representing foreign banks with a U.S. presence. At Chickering, she also worked on investment company issues. Jones then served as Senior Counsel to Bechtel Financing Services, Inc., a member of the Bechtel group of companies, a privately held engineering and construction organization headquartered in San Francisco. There she represented Bechtel as an investor in, and as an arranger of, financing for domestic and international infrastructure projects. Jones worked with Bechtel's clients to arrange optimal financing and she also had extensive dealings with various government regulatory agencies. Last year, Jones came to Washington as the General Counsel for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Jones received a B.A. in Economics from Swarthmore College and a J.D. from Yale Law School. She is a member of the bar in California and New York. "Meredith's background as a business lawyer will be invaluable to the Cable Services Bureau's continued work," Hundt said. "She has expertise in how businesses work and how businesses are financed. At the same time, she has also run a government office and will bring a unique and invaluable combination of skills to her new position." - FCC -
