NEWSReport No. CC 96-13 COMMON CARRIER ACTION June 17, 1996 FCC STAFF RELEASES WORKING COPY OF AN INDUSTRY DEMAND & SUPPLY SIMULATION MODEL The FCC's Industry Analysis Division, Common Carrier Bureau, and the Competition Division, Office of General Counsel, have released a staff model of the telecommunications industry which allows users of the model to calculate a variety of outputs from nearly 200 specifications. The model allows the user to specify growth rates, pricing trends, demand elasticities, and cost relationships to simulate effects in traditional industry segments. The model, using publicly-available, industry-wide information, allows the user to simulate the relative impact of particular changes in the industry. For certain figures, the working draft model contains "dummy" (usually "1919" or "19.19") numbers for certain figures to emphasize that the user should input his or her own figure to run simulations. The presence or absence of any particular option or variable should not be interpreted as a Commission decision or a proposed Commission decision. The model is contained in a LOTUS 123 version 3.1 DOS spreadsheet and occupies 2.5 megabytes of hard disk space. While the spreadsheet can be loaded in EXCEL, Quattro PRO, and newer versions of LOTUS, the graphs, print macros, scenario saver and simulation features may not function correctly on a platform other than LOTUS 123 version 3.1. Copies of the model may be purchased by calling International Transcription Services, Inc. (ITS) at (202) 857-3800. The model also can be downloaded from the Common Carrier Bureau's home page on the World Wide Web. The home page can be accessed directly (http://www.fcc.gov/ccb.html) or through a direct link from the main FCC home page (http://www.fcc.gov). The model can also be downloaded from the FCC-State Link computer bulletin board at (202) 418-0241 [BBS file name MODELV30.ZIP].
