NEWSReport No. CC 96-16 COMMON CARRIER ACTION September 20, 1996 ALAN C. HASSELWANDER TO HEAD NORTH AMERICAN NUMBERING COUNCIL Chairman Reed E. Hundt announced today that Alan C. Hasselwander has agreed to serve as Chairman of the North American Numbering Council (NANC). The Commission established the NANC under the provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, 5 U.S.C., App. 2 (1988)(FACA) to advise the Commission, among other things, on numbering issues, such as implementation of the FCC's number portability rules. Mr. Hasselwander has over 35 years of experience in telecommunications. He joined Rochester Telephone Corporation in 1958 as a Telephone Craftsman and held a variety of positions within the company in the course of his career. Mr. Hasselwander became Chief Executive Officer of Rochester Telephone in 1984 and served in that position until his retirement in 1992. Mr. Hasselwander currently is a member of the Board of Directors of Frontier Corporation (formerly Rochester Telephone), a holding company with substantial interests in the local exchange, interexchange and wireless telecommunications industries. During his career, Mr. Hasselwander served in senior positions in various industry organizations, including as President of the United States Telephone Association (USTA). He chaired several USTA committees, including the Long Range Planning Committee, the Plant Committee, and the Traffic Committee, and served as Co-Chairman of the Bell/Independent Network Planning Committee. He also chaired an Advisory Committee at the Public Utility Institute of the University of Michigan. Mr. Hasselwander has been recognized for his many contributions to the telecommunications industry. He is a member of the Hall of Fame of the New York State Telephone Association and in 1993 received the Distinguished Service Award from USTA. The Simon Graduate School of Management at the University of Rochester presented its Distinguished Alumnus Award to Mr. Hasselwander in 1988. (over) - 2 - Among its various responsibilities, the NANC will: (i) select and guide a neutral administrator of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP); and (ii) apply Commission policy to resolve issues arising in the administration of the NANP, and conduct initial dispute resolution. The NANP Administrator will process number resource applications and maintain administrative numbering databases, but operational details and additional activities of the NANP Administrator are to be determined by the NANC.
