Date FCC RELEASES TELECOMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY REVENUE REPORT $199.0 BILLION IN REVENUE FOR 1995 The FCC has released its Telecommunications Industry Revenue Report based on revenue data for the year ending December 31, 1995. According to the newly released report, the telecommunications industry reported $199.0 billion in revenue for 1995, which represents an increase of 8.8 percent from the $183.2 billion reported for 1994. The report also estimates that the average price of a directly dialed interstate call declined from 13.6 cents per minute in 1992 to 12.3 cents per minute in 1995. According to the Telecommunications Industry Revenue: TRS Fund Worksheet Data, carriers reported $75.5 billion of local service revenue for 1995, $33.9 billion of access revenue, and $89.6 billion of toll service revenue. Carriers classified about 43% of revenues as interstate (including international). Toll carriers -- carriers that identified themselves as interexchange carriers, operator service providers, toll resellers, pay telephone providers, pre-paid calling card providers or "other carriers" -- reported $76.8 billion of revenue. The four largest toll carriers -- AT&T, LDDS WorldCom, MCI, and Sprint -- accounted for 88% of this total. The report also provides summaries for local exchange carriers, cellular & PCS, paging & mobile, and competitive access service providers. The Telecommunications Industry Revenue report is compiled from worksheets carriers use to calculate their contributions to fund interstate telecommunications relay service (TRS) provided to persons with hearing or speech disabilities. This report incorporates revenue data submitted by 3,058 interstate service providers. Data for individual companies are not available to the public because companies have requested proprietary treatment.
