Internet Anonymous FTP site: ftp.fcc.gov Released: Oct. 23, 1996 DA 96-1758 FCC SEEKS COMMENT ON PETITION FOR DECLARATORY RULING FILED BY MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC UTILITIES REGARDING AREA CODE RELIEF PLAN FOR AREA CODES 508 AND 617 (NSD File No. 96-15) On October 9, 1996, the Massachussets Department of Public Utilities (Department) filed a request for declaratory ruling with the Common Carrier Bureau. The Department is currently investigating an appropriate relief plan to address exhaust of area codes 508 and 617 in eastern Massachussets. The Department asks the Federal Communications Commission (Commission) to clarify whether, in implementing a geographic area code split, existing wireless customers would be permitted to retain their current area code, or whether such an arrangement would violate the Commission's Second Interconnection Order. See Implementation of the Local Competition Provisions of the Telecommunicaitons Act of 1996, CC Docket No. 96-98, Second Report and Order and Memorandum Opinion and Order, FCC 96-333 (rel. August 8, 1996). The Department also seeks a ruling from the Commission on whether, if such an arrangement does not violate the Second Interconnection Order, it would require 10-digit local dialing. Interested parties should file comments no later than 5:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday, November 6, 1996. Parties should submit three copies of their comments, referencing NSD File no. 96-15, to Carmell Weathers, Network Services Division, Common Carrier Bureau, FCC, Suite 235, 2000 M Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20554, and one copy to the Commission's contractor for public service records duplication, ITS, Inc., 2100 M Street, N.W., Suite 140, Washington, D.C. 20037.
