Internet Anonymous FTP site: ftp.fcc.gov July 3, 1997 COMMISSION MEETING TO HEAR RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE NETWORK RELIABILITY AND INTEROPERABILITY COUNCIL Representatives of the Commission's Network Reliability and Interoperability Council will present the Council's report and recommendations to the Commission at a meeting which will be held on July 15 beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Commission meeting room (856) at 1919 M Street NW in Washington, D.C. The report deals with the implementation of Section 256 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Section 256 requires the Commission to establish procedures to oversee coordinated network planning by telecommunications carriers and other providers of telecommunications service and permits the FCC to participate in the development of public network interconnectivity standards by appropriate industry standards-setting bodies. The purposes of Section 256 as stated in the statute are (1) to promote non-discriminatory accessibility by the broadest number of users and vendors of communications products and services to public telecommunications networks and (2) to ensure the ability of users and information providers to "seamlessly and transparently transmit and receive information between and across telecommunications networks." The report will be presented to the Commission by NRIC Chairman Ivan Seidenberg, President and CEO of NYNEX.
