COMMISSION ANNOUNCES DETAILS OF TECHNICAL ROUNDTABLE ON IMPLEMENTATION OF AUTOMATIC LOCATION IDENTIFICATION FOR ENHANCED 911 TECHNOLOGIES

CC Docket No. 94-102

In a recent Public Notice (DA 99-1141, released June 9, 1999), the Commission's Office of Engineering and Technology, in cooperation with the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, announced that it will host a roundtable discussion of technical issues involved in implementing the performance and accuracy standards for Enhanced 911 ("E911") Phase II Automatic Location Identification ("ALI") technologies on June 28, 1999. As announced previously, the roundtable will take place on June 28, 1999, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Commission meeting room, 445 12th Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. In this Notice, we describe the agenda and list the scheduled participants in the roundtable, which are subject to changes.

The roundtable will begin with an overview of ALI technologies by Mark Birchler of Motorola and will be followed by brief presentations of individual ALI technologies by:

Among the questions expected to be posed to the panelists are: the level of accuracy and date of availability of particular ALI technologies; the air interfaces for which the technologies are suitable; application of the technologies to the embedded base of wireless phones; ability of the technologies to meet public safety needs; significant technical achievements or limitations associated with any technologies; and the appropriateness of current FCC rules for accuracy measurement and deployment schedules.

Roundtable participants and other interested parties are encouraged to submit information concerning the topics raised during the roundtable, including any information on additional ALI technologies, as ex parte filings in the pending E911 rulemaking proceeding. These submissions should be filed on or before July 2, 1999, consistent with the timetable for filing reply comments on wireless E911 Phase II ALI requirements. (See Public Notice, Wireless Telecommunications Bureau Requests Targeted Comment on Wireless E911 Phase II Automatic Location Identification Requirements, DA 99-1049, rel.
