FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: News Media contact: May 27, 1999 David Fiske: (202) 418-0500 SUSAN FOX NAMED DEPUTY CHIEF, MASS MEDIA BUREAU Susan Fox, currently Senior Legal Advisor to FCC Chairman William E. Kennard, has been named Deputy Chief for Policy of the Commission's Mass Media Bureau. She has been Chairman Kennard's Senior Legal Advisor since November 1997. She has also advised the Chairman on mass media and cable issues. "Susan has been an invaluable asset to my office," said Chairman Kennard. "She is a brilliant lawyer and strategist who combines her great intellect with great people skills. I rely on her sage advice, and I will continue to turn to her as she helps the Mass Media Bureau move forward with its busy agenda." In her new position, Fox will have primary responsibility for dealing with policy issues in the Bureau. She also will be particularly involved with key issues facing the Bureau in the next year, such as the pending ownership proceedings, the proceeding to establish a low power FM service, the proceeding to establish new EEO rules and the ongoing rollout of digital television and radio. Mass Media Bureau Chief Roy Stewart said, "I'm looking forward to working with Susan. She brings a tremendous amount of experience to the Bureau and will be an excellent policy advisor." Before working in the Chairman's Office, Fox was Special Counsel to William Kennard in his previous position as the FCC's General Counsel. In that capacity she advised the General Counsel on implementation of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and on a variety of communications issues, including mass media, cable, common carrier and wireless matters. Fox also served as a trial attorney in the Litigation Division of the Office of General Counsel, where she practiced appellate and district court litigation on behalf of the Commission. Before coming to the FCC, Fox was with the law firm of Hogan & Hartson in Washington, DC. She has also served as law clerk to the Hon. H. Robert Mayer, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. She holds a J.D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and a B.A. in Engineering from Lafayette College. Fox lives in Arlington, VA, with her husband, Jeffrey Markowitz, a trial attorney at the Department of Justice. - FCC -
