Report No. MM 96-9 MASS MEDIA ACTION February 27, 1996 FCC RENEWS LICENSE WGGT-TV, AND ISSUES NAL FOR $17,500 The Commission has granted the application of Guilford Telecasters, Inc. to renew the license for Station WGGT-TV, Greensboro, NC, subject to reporting conditions, and issued the licensee a notice of apparent liability (NAL) in the amount of $17,500 for violations of the Commission's EEO rule. In so doing, the Commission denied the NAACP's petition to deny the license renewal. The Commission found no evidence of employment discrimination. However, the Commission found that the licensee failed to keep adequate recruitment records and failed to self-assess its program until the end of its license term. The licensee was unable to document recruitment activity for any of its 34 overall and 22 upper-level full-time positions. Additionally, the licensee did not keep any applicant or interviewee data. Therefore, the Commission granted the renewal application with appropriate remedies and sanctions. Action by the Commission January 25, 1996, by Memorandum Opinion and Order (FCC 96-24). Chairman Hundt, Commissioners Barrett, Ness, and Chong, with Commissioner Quello concurring in the result. -FCC- Mass Media Bureau contact: Michael T. McMenamin at (202) 418-1450
