FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 29, 1999 COMMISSIONER NESS NAMES DAVID GOODFRIEND AS LEGAL ADVISOR FOR MASS MEDIA AND CABLE TELEVISION Commissioner Ness today announced her appointment of David Goodfriend as legal advisor for mass media and cable television issues. He will begin work at the Commission August 23, 1999. Mr. Goodfriend currently serves as deputy staff secretary at the White House, reviewing documents before they are signed or read by the President and helping to control the flow of information to and from the Oval Office. Prior to that, he practiced telecommunications law for three years in the Washington, D.C. office of Willkie Farr & Gallagher, where he worked with a variety of video and common carrier service providers, as well as content providers. He also has served as a professional staff member on U.S. House and Senate Committees, including the Senate Subcommittee on Government Information and Regulation, then chaired by Sen. Herb Kohl (D-WI). "I am delighted that David has agreed to join my staff," Commissioner Ness said. "His intelligence, energy and government experience will be especially valuable as the Commission continues its efforts to promote competition, ensure diversity of ownership and viewpoints, and streamline regulations." Mr. Goodfriend received his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the Georgetown University Law Center and his Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from Beloit College.
