Report No. ACTION IN DOCKET CASE March 11, 1994 FCC ISSUES FURTHER NOTICE IN SPORTS PROGRAMMING INQUIRY The Commission has issued a Further Notice of Inquiry in its sports programming migration proceeding. The 1992 Cable Act directed the Commission to examine, on a sport- by-sport basis, trends in the movement of sports programming from broadcast television to subscription media and to submit to Congress an interim report on or before July 1, 1993 and a final report on or before July 1, 1994. The Commission's inquiry focuses on professional baseball, basketball, football, and hockey, and on college football and basketball, but commenting parties may discuss other sports as appropriate. The inquiry also examines the impact of preclusive contracts between college athletic conferences and video programming vendors on the supply of local sports programming to local television stations. This Further Notice is designed to update the record that was established in response to the Commission's initial Notice of Inquiry and, in particular, solicits comment on the large number of new contracts that professional and college leagues have recently signed with broadcast and cable networks.
