May 12, 1994 REVIEW BOARD MEMBER NORMAN B. BLUMENTHAL DIES The Commission announces with regret the death on May 11, 1994, of Norman B. Blumenthal, a member of the FCC Review Board since 1981. He died at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland, following a heart attack. He was 51 years old. Before coming to the FCC, Mr. Blumenthal held various positions with WIOO, Carlisle, and WCMB, Harrisburg, PA. He joined the Commission in September 1968 in the Office of General Counsel. In July of 1972, former Commissioner Benjamin L. Hooks selected Mr. Blumenthal as his legal assistant, a position he held for five years. In 1977, Mr. Blumenthal returned to the Office of General Counsel as Associate General Counsel after Commissioner Hooks resigned to head the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Mr. Blumenthal served in that post until being named to the Review Board. In addition to his duties on the Review Board, Mr. Blumenthal was detailed in 1986 to serve former Chairman Mark Fowler as Senior Policy Advisor on International Communications. A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Blumenthal received a B.S. in Business Administration from New York University and, in 1968, he received a J.D. degree from Dickinson School of Law, Carlisle, PA. Commissioner and former Chairman James H. Quello commented: Norman Blumenthal served with distinction on the prestigious FCC Review Board. His comprehensive communications expertise, his institutional knowledge and dynamic presence will be greatly missed at the FCC and by the American communications industry. He was a confidante to Commissioners and Chairmen during his 26 years at the Commission. I am personally losing a valued advisor and cherished friend. Mr. Blumenthal is survived by his wife Sara and his daughters Amanda Blumenthal of Philadelphia and Gery Blumenthal of Chevy Chase.
