NEWS August 17, 1995 FCC CHAIRMAN HUNDT ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF A PUBLIC SAFETY WIRELESS ADVISORY COMMITTEE FCC Chairman Reed Hundt today announced the formation of a Public Safety Wireless Advisory Committee "to ensure that public safety is part of the modern communications revolution." In an address, prepared for delivery, at the Annual Conference of the Association of Public Safety Communications Officers (APCO) at the Westin Hotel in Detroit, MI, Chairman Hundt said the Advisory Committee, to be administered by the FCC and NTIA, has four goals: þ To obtain sufficient spectrum for public safety to meet all its communication needs at the quality standards it demands. þ To create an environment that promotes interoperability, emerging technologies, and efficiency where technology can meet requirements instead of limiting them. þ The competition for spectrum be turned to public safety's advantage in providing opportunity to purchase new equipment and financing the transition to the new environment. þ The structure evolves to one managed by the users, and not in Washington. Hundt told APCO that in this world of technological progress, "...we must look ahead to see whether the lives of each American at their workplace and their home is enriched by this progress. Not only should citizens have the opportunity to get more cable channels or movies on demand, but they should also be recipients of the innovations and progress in the public safety arena," he said. In his speech, Hundt said that "each of you, as members of APCO, represent the high value of serving and meeting the public's trust. When the public thinks of government, it is the work of the public safety agencies that first comes to mind. It is where the public turns when they are most in need." He said, "The efforts of APCO, the public safety agencies and the commitment of each of you fulfilling daily duties, combine the great opportunities of both communications and public service." - FCC -
