NEWS October 8, 1996 FCC TO DEMO ELECTRONIC FILING SYSTEM AT CTIA'S WIRELESS APPLICATIONS CONFERENCE IN LAS VEGAS, NV October 7 - 8, 1996 The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will demonstrate its electronic filing system at CTIA's Wireless Applications Conference in Las Vegas, NV from October 7-8, 1996 (Booth #400). Electronic filing allows potential bidders to file applications, bid for licenses and get information about ongoing auctions using computers. The Wireless Applications Conference will be the first time the FCC's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau (WTB) has brought its system to a trade show in order to demonstrate the ease of using electronic filing. "We are bringing our electronic filing system to CTIA's show to give more people an opportunity to try the system and ask questions," said Wireless Telecommunications Bureau Chief Michele Farquhar. "Our goal is to demonstrate the system's accessibility in a "hands-on" environment." This fall, the FCC has expanded the use of electronic filing so that applications for almost all WTB services can be filed through this means. The services include: Personal Communications Services, Land Mobile Radio Services, General Mobile Radio Service, Broadcast Auxiliary Service, Amateur Radio Service and Interactive Video Data Service license applications. Through the use of electronic filing, applicants have several options: (1) Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), or the exchange of business information electronically between organizations without human intervention; (2) Electronic Transfer (ELT), or the exchange of business information electronically in a designated record layout provided to an organization by the FCC; and (3) Interactive point-to- point filing over the FCC Wide Area Network (Interactive), or an exchange of business information by accessing the FCC on-line computer and interactively entering data. In addition, the WTB will be unveiling World Wide Web-based applications that will permit applicants to file their applications over the Internet. Electronic filing is one of the ways in which WTB has improved upon its processes (see attached). - FCC - News Media contact: Kara Palamaras at (202) 418-0654 Wireless Telecommunications Bureau contact: Tom Dombrowsky at (202) 418-0620
