Engineer-in-Training Program
Recruit@fcc.gov

The Federal Communications Commission is seeking applications from engineering school graduates with superior academic credentials and an interest in communications engineering and IP networks for its Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Program to be held during 2008. Through the EIT Program, the FCC recruits recent engineering school graduates and provides comprehensive training in the field of communications.

The FCC will accept applications from recent engineering graduates for multiple openings in the EIT Program during the application window of March 26, 2008 through April 23, 2008.

All EIT Program participants will receive training in Washington, DC. Engineers hired as part of the EIT Program will fill positions located at the FCC’s headquarters in Washington, DC, its Gettysburg, PA facility, or one of the existing FCC field offices that are located throughout the United States. The FCC ‘s field offices are located in Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Columbia, MD; Dallas, TX; Denver, CO; Detroit, MI; Kansas City, MO; Los Angeles, CA; New Orleans, LA; New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA; San Diego, CA; Pleasanton, CA; Seattle, WA; and Tampa, FL. Applicants must specify locations for which they wish to be considered.

Interested candidates must submit all information requested in FCC’s 2008 Vacancy Announcement Number [DEU-EIT-2008-0001] including a cover letter, resume, writing sample, school transcript, and list of references when applying for consideration. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The FCC Vacancy Announcement is available on the FCC’s website at http://www.fcc.gov/jobs/. A simple registration process through the Commission’s on-line recruitment tool, FCCJobs, allows candidates to apply for positions online via the Internet. Selection for participation in the Engineer-in-Training Program is expected to be highly competitive. Selection criteria include: academic achievement as demonstrated by class standing, demonstrated technical competence (e.g., work experience, co-op, or class projects), writing skills; and demonstrated interest in government service and/or the subject of communications and technology.

Engineers at the FCC work on cutting-edge issues in the communications and high-tech arenas, including those affecting the deployment of next generation wireless and satellite systems, digital television and other broadcast services, various radio transmission services, IP networks, interference resolution, public safety and homeland security. They also promote the deployment of broadband technologies as well as access to communications services for Americans with disabilities, and protect the rights of consumers. The FCC’s work also involves interacting with other government agencies, Congress and the private sector to resolve complex policy issues.

The EIT Program will be composed of classroom and on-the-job training. This teaches engineers basic and advanced skills that will be necessary in performing tasks as electronics engineers at the FCC. The training will focus on an overview of the FCC and its functions; the agency's policy and rulemaking processes; other administrative processes for government agencies; technical training covering a wide variety of telecommunications services and technologies including advanced satellite communications systems, terrestrial fixed and mobile systems (cellular and PCS) and multi-point distribution systems; operational training in spectrum sharing techniques and spectrum management principles; wireline communication topics will also be covered including the public switched telephone network, cable TV, IP Networks and various network architecture issues.
