 PRESS STATEMENT OF COMMISSIONER GLORIA TRISTANI REGARDING
  FALSE INFORMATION ON THE DEUTSCHE TELEKOM   VOICESTREAM
                         PROCEEDING
  
  
  It has come to my attention that two letters have recently circulated regarding the
  Deutsche Telekom   VoiceStream transaction pending before the Commission.  One letter
  purports to be from a member of my staff and the other from Senator Ernest F. Hollings. 
  As a general rule, I do not comment on pending adjudicatory proceedings.  In this
  instance, however, I want to make clear that neither I nor any member of my staff has sent
  a letter to Senator Hollings regarding the transaction.  I am deeply troubled that the
  Commission's process is being used for deceitful purposes, and I have asked the Chairman
  to initiate a full investigation of this matter and to refer it to other federal agencies as
  appropriate.
