Amber Alert
What is the AMBER PLAN?
The AMBER Plan is a voluntary partnership between law enforcement agencies
and the media to send out an emergency alert to the public in serious child
abduction cases. AMBER, which stands for America's Missing:
Broadcast Emergency Response, was
established in 1996 in response to the abduction and murder of nine-year old
Amber Hagerman in Arlington, Texas. Under the AMBER Plan, area radio and television
stations interrupt programming to broadcast information concerning a serious
child abduction case using the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The goal is the
safe recovery of missing children that a law enforcement agency believes has
been abducted and is in danger of serious harm or death. Missing adults,
runaways, and children taken in child custody disputes usually do not qualify
for Amber Plan activation.
