Session 1-Distance Learning and Telemedicine

Name: David Stephens
Entity: OnSat
Title: Co-Founder and CEO
Topic: Distance Learning

As the co-founder of OnSat in 1997, David is working to bridge the digital divide by building Solar.net villages in remote areas of the world, including the Amazon, Honduras, Haiti, and Native American Lands throughout the United States. He is motivated by the belief that by making the Internet more affordable, useable, and available, the world will turn information into knowledge to develop sustainable economies.

One example of OnSat's work is in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Navajo Nation. OnSat has installed and currently operates a broadband satellite based service that connects over 125 Navajo Nation Chapter Houses and other sites for voice, video, data, and the Internet. The Navajo Nation is using this connectivity to become more self-sustainable using various methods of distance education, health care, and e-commerce. David is a member of the Grameen Foundation Technology Advisory Board.
