RENATA HESSE NAMED SENIOR COUNSEL TO THE
CHAIRMAN FOR TRANSACTIONS
Washington, D.C. -- Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowskiannounced today the appointment of Renata Hesse as Senior Counsel to the Chairman for
Transactions. Ms. Hesse (no relation to Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint) will head the working team
that is conducting the review of the proposed AT&T/T-Mobile transaction, and will oversee the
inter-bureau steering committee established to coordinate the agency's review of the merger
application.
FCC Chairman Genachowski said

leadership will help ensure that our review of this important transaction is fair, thorough and
efficient."
Renata Hesse is currently a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich
& Rosati, where her practice focuses on antitrust litigation and counseling. Considered one of the
country's preeminent technology antitrust attorneys, Ms. Hesse advises clients in complex
merger and non-merger investigations before both the Department of Justice and the Federal
Trade Commission, as well as in civil litigation in the federal courts.
Ms. Hesse previously served as the chief of the Networks and Technology Enforcement Section
of the Department of Justice Antitrust Division. During her tenure at the Antitrust Division, she
was responsible for some of the most significant antitrust litigation brought by the Department of
Justice in the last decade, including the DOJ litigation with Oracle Corporation in connection
with its proposed acquisition of PeopleSoft and with First Data Corporation in connection with
its proposed acquisition of Concord EFS. In addition, Ms. Hesse worked extensively on the DOJ
litigation against American Airlines for predatory conduct and Microsoft Corporation for illegal
maintenance of its monopoly in Intel-compatible PC operating systems.
Prior to joining the Department of Justice, Ms. Hesse practiced at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison
LLP in San Francisco, California, where her work primarily focused on complex litigation
involving intellectual property and antitrust issues in technology industries.
Ms. Hesse received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Wellesley College. She earned a J.D. from
the University of California, Berkeley.
