Statement of Acting Chairwoman Clyburn on the Passing of William Gray IIIWashington, D.C. Acting Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn has issued the following statement on the
passing of former Rep. William Gray III:
"With the passing of William Gray III, our country has lost a hero, and my family has lost a
friend. Throughout his life, Bill Gray was a force for social justice, whether as a pastor of Bright
Hope Baptist Church, chair of the House Budget Committee or CEO of the United Negro
College Fund. He gave voice to the voiceless and inspired others through his example.
Even if I had never met Bill Gray, I would consider him an American original. But I was also
fortunate enough to know him personally. He and my father share a special bond as the only
African Americans to serve as House Majority Whip, and I will forever be grateful for his
kindness to my family. My deepest sympathies go to his wife, Andrea, and their three sons."
