STATEMENT FROM FCC CHAIRMAN JULIUS GENACHOWSKI ON THE U.S. SUBMISSION

OF INITIAL INPUT INTO THE INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATION UNION’S

WORLD CONFERENCE ON INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS

“Today, the United States submitted its initial input to the International Telecommunication Union’s
World Conference on International Telecommunications, or WCIT, which will be held in December in
Dubai. I am proud to support the vision for the future put forth by the United States in its filing today, a
vision which embraces competition, market-based policies, and the current multi-stakeholder model of
Internet governance.
“Since the beginning of my Chairmanship, I have fought for Internet freedom. The proposals by some
countries to restrict the free flow of information online would threaten one of the most powerful engines
for global economic growth and the spread of democracy in the 21st century. As today’s U.S.
contribution makes clear, the WCIT must embrace the successes of the last two decades of liberalization
in telecommunications regulation and the existing multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance to
ensure continued investment and growth of the Internet around the globe.”
