RULEMAKING ON THE 4.9 GHZ BAND

On June 13, 2012, the Federal Communications Commission issued a Fifth Further Notice of
Proposed Rulemaking addressing the 4940-4990 MHz (4.9 GHz) public safety band.1 The Commission
proposed rules and asked for comment on a number of issues to improve spectrum efficiency and
encourage greater use of the 4.9 GHz band for public safety broadband communications. The Fifth
FNPRM set deadlines for filing comments and reply comments at 60 and 90 days after publication in the
Federal Register.2
On August 1, 2012, the Office of the Federal Register published a summary of the Fifth FNPRM
and associated comment and reply comment dates.3 Accordingly, comments must be filed on or before
October 1, 2012; and reply comments must be filed on or before October 30, 2012.4 The Fifth FNPRM
sets forth the comment filing instructions.
