JOHN R. HOFFMAN TO HEAD NORTH AMERICAN NUMBERING COUNCIL


Chairman William E. Kennard announced today that John R. Hoffman has agreed to serve as Chairman of the North American Numbering Council (NANC). The Commission established the NANC under the provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, 5 U.S.C., App. 2 (1988) (FACA) to advise the Commission on numbering issues. Mr. Hoffman succeeds Alan C. Hasselwander, former CEO of Frontier Corporation, who served as the first NANC Chairman for three years.

Mr. Hoffman has a degree in Law from the University of Missouri and 30 years of experience in telecommunications. He first joined United Telecommunications, Inc.(formerly United Utilities, Inc.) as a law clerk in 1967 and later became General Attorney in 1970. He later served as General Counsel and Secretary at United Telephone System-Southeast Group; Vice President-General Counsel and Secretary at United Telephone System, Inc., and Senior Vice President - Legal and External Affairs at US Telecom, Inc. Most recently, Mr. Hoffman served as Senior Vice President - External Affairs for US Sprint and Sprint Corporation until his retirement this year.

Mr. Hoffman has served as director for a number of organizations, including CompTel (serving as Chairman in 1986-87), the P.H. Henson Club of the Independent Telephone Pioneer Association (President in 1989), Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City, the Kansas City Area Economic Development Council, New Mexico State University Center for Public Utilities, the United Telephone Company of the Northwest, and Compaq Computer Board of Advisors.

Mr. Hoffman resides in Mission Hills, Kansas with his wife Linda. Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman have one married daughter.
