FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 21, 1999 BOB CALAFF NAMED ASSOCIATE CHIEF OF THE OFFICE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY The FCC has announced that Bob Calaff, most recently interim legal advisor to Commissioner Harold W. Furchtgott-Roth, has become Associate Chief of the Office of Engineering and Technology (OET). His responsibilities will include advising the Chief of OET regarding legal and policy issues before the office. Calaff joined the Commission in November 1994 as an attorney in the Office of General Counsel. In December 1996, Calaff moved to the front office of the International Bureau as Senior Counsel, where he advised the Bureau Chief on international telecommunications and satellite matters. In September 1998, Calaff joined the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau (WTB) as Assistant Bureau Chief, focussing on policy and enforcement matters. While working in WTB, he served separate details advising Chairman Kennard, Commissioner Powell, and Commissioner Furchtgott-Roth on wireless and international matters. Prior to joining the Commission, Calaff was an associate in the Washington, DC, office of Powell, Goldstein, Frazier and Murphy. Calaff earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Harvard College in 1985. He was awarded the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Fellowship to study at the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs, where he received the degree of Master of Public Administration in 1990. In 1992, Calaff received his Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University School of Law. Calaff is a Past President of the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia.
