WASHINGTON, D.C. 20554 News media information 202/418-0500 Fax-On-Demand 202/418-2830 Internet: http://www.fcc.gov ftp.fcc.gov RELEASED: MAY 8, 1998 OET TUTORIAL ON THIRD GENERATION DIGITAL MOBILE STANDARDS The Office of Engineering and Technology will present a tutorial on "Third Generation Digital Mobile Standards: Around the World with IMT-2000" on May 12 in the Commission Meeting Room, Room 856, 1919 M Street N.W., at 1:30 p.m. The tutorial will be given by Richard Engleman of the FCC's International Bureau. Mr. Engleman has a BSEE degree from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, worked in small market radio after graduation, and has extensive experience in the FCC's (then) Broadcast Bureau, Field Operations Bureau and Office of Engineering and Technology. He has been with the International Bureau for about a year. The Third Generation movement is looking to create an international agreed standard for mobile communications that would include increased data rates, the possibility of two-way visual transmission and multimedia capabilities. The two major standards currently contending are GSM and W-CDMA, wideband code division multiple access. The public is invited to attend; no prior reservations are necessary.
