OET TUTORIAL:
"THE INTERNET AND THE PUBLIC SWITCHED TELEPHONE NETWORK" SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER 11TH AT 9 A.M. IN THE COMMISSION MEETING ROOM

The Office of Engineering and Technology will present a tutorial on "The Internet and the Public Switched Telephone Network" on December 11th from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Commission Meeting Room, Room 856, in 1919 M Street N. W.

The tutorial will address the deployment of internet telephony as either an alternative or compliment to the PSTN. Some of the issues that will be discussed include: ability of IP vs. PSTN to be scaled for future expansion and the provision of advanced services; compatibility of IP and PSTN call processing procedures; IP vs. PSTN performance and quality; ability of IP vs. PSTN to support emergency services; the security of IP vs. PSTN against hacking and fraud; and ability of IP vs. PSTN to meet both privacy and law enforcement needs.

The tutorial will be given by Christian Huitema, Chief Scientist in the Bellcore Internet Architecture Research Laboratory.

Every effort is made to ensure that a wide diversity of viewpoints (and product manufacturers) are represented at the OET tutorials. By sponsoring the tutorial, the FCC is not endorsing any particular viewpoint or product. This is the 77th in a series of tutorials that began in 1980.

Video tapes of the tutorial will be available through the FCC's contract copier, InFocus, located at 341 Victory Drive, Herndon, VA 20170 (703-834-0100).

The public is invited to attend, no preregistration is needed. For further information contact Jack Linthicum at 202-418-2441 voice, 202-418-1918 fax or e-mail JLINTHIC@FCC.GOV.
