OET TUTORIAL:
"THE IMPACT OF CONVERGENCE"
SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 10TH AT 10 A.M.
IN THE COMMISSION MEETING ROOM

The Office of Engineering and Technology will present a tutorial on "The Impact of Convergence" on February 10, 2000 from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Commission Meeting Room, 445 12th Street S.W., Washington D.C. The tutorial is open to the public. No registration is required.

The tutorial will be presented by Motorola, Inc. and will focus on convergence from the viewpoint of the evolution of communication into a core network which links multiple spaces, including automobiles, offices, homes, and individuals, in order to make them smarter, more connected, and interconnected. Historically, different networks have been designed and deployed to transport different types of network traffic. The public switched telephone network and cellular telephone systems, for example, are optimized for the transport of basic voice communications, while television broadcast and cable networks are optimized for the transport of broadcast video information. The Internet is the prototypical transport system for packet-based data traffic. In this tutorial, speakers will discuss how the need to transport diverse types of traffic over each of these networks is leading to an architectural convergence of historically disparate systems and how this development is leading to a services and applications renaissance in the office, home, car and personal environments.

The tutorial be presented by the following Motorola representatives:

Rich Barth, Vice President and Director of Telecommunications Strategy and Regulation;
Dr. Alain Briancon, VP and Director, Digital DNA Service Platform Architecture, Semiconductor Products Sector, will address the nature of convergence, including service and application enablers for the office and person, including Java, WAP, Bluetooth, and others;
Vedat Eyuboglu, VP and GM, Home Networking, will address convergence in the home space;
Jim Nickel, Director of Technology, Telematics Communications Group, will address convergence in the automobile space;
Alberto Gutierrez, Director Global Standards, Network Solutions Sector, will address the migration to Internet Protocal (IP) transport on the network and how this will provide links to different spaces, enabling rapid creation of new services.

This is the 80th in a series of tutorials that began in 1980. Every effort is made to ensure that a wide diversity of viewpoints and product manufacturers are represented at the OET tutorials. By sponsoring a tutorial, the FCC is not endorsing any particular viewpoint or product.

The tutorial will be available through Internet services RealAudio, and Streaming Video. Check with the FCC website for details: www.fcc.gov. Videotapes of the tutorial sessions will be available from the FCC contractor, InFocus, 341 Victory Drive, Herndon, VA. 20170; Tel. 703-834-0100 (voice) and 703-834-0111 (fax).
