OET/CORNING OFFER TUTORIAL ON OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS |
||
Dr. B. Roe Hemenway, Manager of Optical Network Equipment Research at Corning's Sullivan Park Research facility in the state of New York, will present an examination of Corning's role in optical fiber communications on October 24, 2001 from 2:30 to 4:30 in the Commission meeting room. Corning is the inventor and world's largest manufacturer of optical fiber and cable as well as photonic components that constitute the optical layer. Dr. Hemenway will discuss Corning's optical networking strategy. He will discuss the range of products and technologies associated with implementing the strategy. These include optical fiber and photonic components and such technologies as dense wavelength division multiplexing, optical amplification, highly scaleable and reconfigurable optical cross connects, add drop multiplexers, and other novel transport technologies. Dr. Hemenway will show how today's optical layer has the unique ability to cost-effectively manage network capacity at data rates varying from as little as a few megabits per second at the edge of the network up to hundreds of terabits per second at the core of the network. For further information contact Kent Nilsson at 202-418-0845 or TTY 202-418-2989. Real Audio and streaming video access to the meeting will be available at http://www.fcc.gov. |
