NEWS Report No. MM 97 -15 MASS MEDIA ACTION September 26, 1997 FIRST TWO AM EXPANDED BAND APPLICATIONS GRANTED TO STATIONS IN ARVADA, COLORADO AND LAKE OSWEGO, OREGON Today, the Federal Communications Commission's Mass Media Bureau issued the first two broadcast construction permits for AM expanded band stations, granting the applications of Radio Property Ventures, licensee of KQXI(AM), Arvada, Colorado and KPHP Radio, Inc., licensee of KPHP(AM), Lake Oswego, Oregon. In taking these actions the Bureau also denied a petition to deny each of the applications filed jointly by Press Broadcasting, Inc. and Kovas Communications, Inc. In March, the Bureau issued a Public Notice which listed eighty-eight stations eligible to apply for allotments in the AM expanded band, that portion of the AM band between 1605 and 1705 kHz. KQXI and KPHP were two of the sixty-seven AM stations which filed applications prior to the June deadline announced in the Public Notice. The KQXI and KPHP construction permits specify operation on 1690 and 1640 kHz, respectively. Stations receiving AM expanded band authorizations will be licensed to broadcast for five years on both their existing and expanded band frequencies. At the end of this period each licensee will be required to return either its existing or expanded band license to the Commission for cancellation. These grants constitute another important Commission step to help revitalize AM broadcasting and to reduce congestion and interference in the AM band.
