WASHINGTON, D.C. 20554 News Media Information: (202) 418-0500 Fax-On-Demand: (202) 418-2830 Internet: http://www.fcc.gov ftp.fcc.gov DA 97-1443 July 10, 1997 WIRELESS TELECOMMUNICATIONS BUREAU MAKES AVAILABLE ON-LINE MAPPING FOR FCC AUCTION DATA As part of its new Geographic Information System (GIS) initiative, the Federal Communications Commission has expanded its on-line services to include the capability to create maps of completed FCC spectrum auctions via the World Wide Web. To date, the Commission has conducted spectrum auctions covering a variety of services, including Personal Communications Services (PCS), Multipoint Distribution Service (MDS), 900 MHz Specialized Mobile Radio (SMR), and Cellular Unserved. Computer users can now create detailed maps of the auction data for these particular auctions on-line. Users can access one of seven completed auctions and make queries on summary data such as markets by price (in dollars per unit of population), number of bids received in a specific round, and licenses receiving new high bids or having standing high bids in a particular round. Users can also make queries on the activity of a specific bidder in a round. Once a map is created, users have the ability to zoom in or out depending on the level of detail they would like to see. They also have the ability to "drill down" and see summary statistics of a specific license, such as population, high bidder, and high bid price. In addition, it is possible to view the data for all markets shown on the map in table format. The GIS mapping of auction data is part of a continuing effort by the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau to make auctions data available in quick, easy-to-use formats. This is the first generation of mapping the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau plans to make available to the public. Future plans include expanding the functionality to include round-by-round results of ongoing auctions as well to expanding the amount of information available on-line. The GIS can be accessed by any World Wide Web browser at http://uls-gis.fcc.gov For further information, contact Brett Tarnutzer, Auctions & Industry Analysis Division, Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, at (202) 418-0660.
