What is it about the Internet that has made it such an extraordinary platform for free speech, civic participation, democratic engagement, journalism, and cultural creativity? The workshop will examine the relationship between the Internet's openness and democratic speech and participation, including its impact on so-called "citizen journalism," as well as blogging, political organizing, and cultural expression. The workshop will also contrast the Internet with other communications media.
