Accessibility & Innovation Initiative Speaker Series Presents Juan Gilbert: Innovation in Voting Accessibility

Dr. Juan E. Gilbert, one of the winners of the 2012 Chairman's Award for Advancement in Accessibility (Chairman's AAA), was the honored speaker at the third A&I Initiative Speaker Series, March 11, 2014, at FCC headquarters in Washington. Dr. Gilbert and his research lab won the AAA award in the Civic Participation Solutions category for the Prime III voting system. Dr. Gilbert and his team describe the system as a secure, multimodal electronic voting system that takes a universal design approach to address security, trust and ease of use. Dr. Gilbert's research team has conducted studies on the time it takes to vote in an effort to reduce voting lines on Election Day. The presentation included a demonstration of Prime III and other voting innovations created in Dr. Gilbert's lab.

Dr. Gilbert is the Presidential Endowed Professor and Chair of the Human-Centered Computing (HCC) Division in the School of Computing at Clemson University where he leads the HCC Lab. He is also a Fellow of the American Association of the Advancement of Science, National Associate of the National Research Council of the National Academies, an ACM Distinguished Scientist and a Senior Member of the IEEE. Dr. Gilbert was recently named one of the 50 most important African-Americans in Technology.
