On June 25, 2015, the FCC released an order extending the deadline by 120 days, from June 30, 2015 until October 28, 2015, for a report to be filed by broadcasters about (1) their experiences with the new Electronic Newsroom Technique (ENT) closed captioning rules and (2) the extent to which the new ENT rules provide for full and equal access to live television programming (ENT Report).
The FCC granted this extension in response to a joint petition submitted by the National Association of Broadcasters, several organizations representing people who are deaf and hard of hearing, and the Technology Access Program at Gallaudet University (TAP). The extension of time is intended to give broadcasters and consumer organizations sufficient time to collect accurate data about the use of ENT, to analyze that data, and to collaborate with each other to prepare the ENT Report. Once submitted, the ENT Report will help the FCC evaluate whether to take additional action to ensure fully accessible live television programming.
