On August 5, 2021, the FCC issued a Public Notice reminding the public that there will be a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) at 2:20 p.m. EDT on August 11, 2021, with a backup date of August 25, 2021. The Public Notice also notes ongoing efforts to promote alerting accessibility.
The Public Notice explains that the audio EAS test message will not be identical to the visual EAS test message. The FCC and FEMA are working to examine potential technical solutions that can address the difference between the visual and audio messages for future nationwide tests. This year, the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau plans to open an initiative on potential measures for FCC action.
