FCC Consumer Advisory Committee Recommendation
Regarding the Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure initiative (GPII.net)
The Federal Communications Commission should study public-private partnerships
and commercial-academic consortiums, such as work underway in Europe and Canada
on the Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure initiative (GPII.net), to
determine what role these collaborative efforts may play in promoting broadband
adoption and use by people with disabilities, older adults and anyone who has
trouble using information and communication technologies effectively. We
understand that GPII technology may aid adoption by enabling individual users to
access their personalized interface features or adaptations (for example, large
print, simplified language and captions) anytime, anywhere, on any computer or
device they encounter, thus reducing costs and need for staff support while
increasing interoperability and innovation. Many of GPII's partners are based
in America and could be encouraged to launch similar efforts within the United
States.
The GPII, though it may foster access, does not mitigate the need to implement
accessibility policies.
