**FCC SEEKS COMMENT ON ELIMINATION OF SECTION 214 APPLICATIONS FOR EXTENSIONS OF LINES UNDER THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS ACT OF 1996 - CC DOCKET NO. 97-11 (REPORT NO. CC 97-2, COMMON CARRIER ACTION). The Commission took another step in de-regulating the telecommunications marketplace and continued its implementation of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (the 1996 Act). In an NPRM released today, the Commission tentatively concludes that carriers should no longer be required to seek Section 214 approval from the Commission before expanding phone services to consumers within any new geographic area they are otherwise eligible to serve. Action by the Commission, January 9, 1997, by NPRM (FCC 97-6). News Media Contact: Jodie Buenning (202) 418-0500. CCB Contact: Marty Schwimmer at (202) 418-2334 or Richard R.
