Technology Transitions and Public Safety

9:00 am - 5:45 pm EDT
FCC 445 12TH ST SW WASHINGTON DC 20554

Representatives from public safety agencies and organizations, service providers, technology vendors, and other stakeholders convened to explore the impact of the technology transition on key public safety, emergency response, and national security functions.  This workshop, previously announced on March 14, 2014 and will explored the impact of the technology transition on key public safety, emergency response, and national security functions.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) provided an initial agenda and session participant information (subject to change) for the workshop on “Public Safety Imperatives for All-IP Networks” scheduled for April 17, 2014 and April 18, 2014 in Washington, D.C. The workshop was comprised of four sessions that focused on current public safety, emergency response and national security dependencies on legacy switched telecommunications infrastructure and challenges in four categories:  (1) day-to-day public safety operations in an all-IP world; (2) disaster preparation and responses in an all-IP world; (3) additional risk factors from cyber exploits on commercial, public and government networks; and (4) the impact of technology transitions on national security and federal government systems.  Participants shared their real world expertise and contributed their individual views and analysis as to how an all-IP-based infrastructure can support a range of public safety mission requirement. Sessions on Thursday, April 17, 2014 were open to the public and all were invited to attend. The session on Friday, April 18, 2014 was limited to invited federal interagency participants only. However, a public synopsis of the Friday session will be made available after the event.

Audience members and viewers of the webcast were given the opportunity to engage in the public session discussions during the workshop via email at livequestions@fcc.gov and on Twitter using the “#TechTransitions” hashtag. To facilitate ongoing dialogue between interested parties, FCC hosted a online discussion forum that could be accessed through this event page beginning April 17, 2014. Anyone is welcome to join the dialogue, and all comments will become part of the official record for the GN Docket No. 13-5 proceeding. The forum will be open for comments until close of business on May 1, 2014.

Comments, reply comments, and ex parte submissions will be available for public inspection during regular business hours in the FCC Reference Center, Federal Communications Commission, 445 12th Street, S.W., CY-A257, Washington, D.C., 20554. These documents will also be available via the Commission’s Electronic Comment Filing System (ECFS). Documents will be available electronically in ASCII, Microsoft Word, and/or Adobe Acrobat.
