On 6/30/2000, Bell Atlantic (BNTR) and GTE Corporation (GTTC) merged into one company, Verizon Communications. GTE Southwest, Inc. was renamed GTE Southwest, Incorporated dba Verizon Southwest. In addition, Verizon Communications sold a majority of the study areas under this company. On 7/31/2000, the Arkansas study area (GTAR) was sold to CenturyTel. On 8/31/2000, the Oklahoma (GTOK) and the two New Mexico study areas (GTNM & CONM) were sold to Valor Telecom. The two Texas study areas were remained under the GTE Southwest, Incorporated dba Verizon Southwest.
