On May 2, 2005, Hawaiian Telcom Communications, Inc. (Hawaiian Telcom) began operations when its parent, The Carlyle Group (a private global investment firm), bought Verizon Hawaii, Inc. from Verizon Communications. Hawaii Telcom will remain a holding company/operating company with one study area, Hawaii.
