Centel merged with Sprint in 1992. Central Telephone of Texas continues as an operating company under the Sprint holding company with one study area jurisdiction: Texas.

In 2006, following a 2004 merger between Sprint and Nextel, the Sprint local telephone companies were spun off to become Embarq Local Operating Companies, though the company's name did not change.
