    Broadband technology enables transmission of wide ranging information contributing to safety, health and economic well-being. Broadband is a platform for opportunity and innovation in health care, education, energy, job training, civic engagement, commercial transactions, government performance, public safety and other areas. Due in large part to private investment and market-driven innovation, broadband in America has improved considerably in the last decade. More Americans are online at faster speeds than ever before, yet challenges to the availability, adoption and utilization of broadband remain.

    Spectrum is a vital component of mobile communications infrastructure and the backbone of a growing part of the U.S. economy. Maximizing the yield from this essential 21st century resource will create jobs, drive economic growth, and encourage innovation and investment. The FCC administers spectrum for non-Federal use (i.e., state, local government, commercial, private internal business, and personal use) and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration administers spectrum for Federal use.

  • Connecting America
    The FCC is focused on ensuring that every American has access to telecommunications services. The FCC is working to expand the availability of telecommunications devices for those living in native communities and on tribal lands. Communications technology evolves at a rapid pace, and accessibility to technology should do the same. Accessibility protections for people with disabilities must keep pace with broadband, digital, and mobile innovations.

  • Media & Marketplace
    The FCC is charged with ensuring that the media marketplace remains vibrant, robust, and competitive. The FCC administers programs for electronic media, including cable television, broadcast television, radio and direct broadcast satellite in the United States and its territories. The competitive framework for communications services should foster innovation and offer consumers reliable and meaningful selections in affordable services.

  • International
    The FCC has responsibility to initiate and direct, in coordination with other U.S government agencies, the development of international telecommunications policies reflecting the commission’s priorities. Areas include promoting the vital interests of the American public in international commerce, national defense and foreign policy areas.
